Several Canada geese found dead in Whitby Harbour last week likely died of bird flu, initial results from the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) show.
Brian Stevens, a wildlife pathologist with CWHC’s Ontario/Nunavut Region, confirmed the early results Tuesday evening. The samples will need to be sent to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for confirmation.
Residents in Whitby are being advised to avoid contact with any dead geese and ensure their pets stay leashed so they don’t consume the carcasses.
If anyone notices a sick or deceased bird in Whitby, they are encouraged to report it to Animal Services at 905-655-0283 and provide the location.
Last week, the City of Brampton also reported several dead waterfowl at Professor’s Lake and Reginald Conover Pond, located near Mc Vean Drive and Cottrelle Boulevard. The city suspects these waterfowl may have contracted avian influenza.
