A collaborative investigation by South Bruce OPP and Saugeen Shores Police Service is currently taking place regarding a serious motor vehicle accident that occurred in downtown Port Elgin on Saturday afternoon.
A black pickup truck was left in the closed intersection of Gustavus St. and Goderich St. (Highway 21) for several hours as police examined the area – car parts were scattered across the road, and multiple vehicles parked or driving on Gustavus St. were heavily damaged.
A witness who was shopping nearby reported seeing a man fleeing from the crash site.
While there’s no confirmed link, a local taxi driver is recovering from a head injury caused by a man attempting to steal her cab just around the corner from the collision site on Saturday afternoon.
The neighbor of the victim, who wished to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, mentioned that the taxi driver, bleeding from her head wound, came to their Waterloo St. apartment asking his wife for assistance. She explained she was returning home when she was struck by the man, who fled when he couldn’t start her vehicle.
The woman was taken to hospital for treatment. In a social media update at 6:30 p. m. on Feb. 21 regarding the crash, Saugeen Shores police shared that an “active investigation between Saugeen Shores Police and Ontario Provincial Police” is ongoing. They added there are no public safety concerns at this time and further details will not be released yet. At this point, any connection remains unclear; however, shortly after at 7:30 p. m., an OPP West post on social media stated that police had returned to their regular patrols and that increased police visibility had concluded south of Port Elgin between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road. Earlier at 4:44 p. m., OPP West had indicated that Bruce-Saugeen Townline was closed in that vicinity due to heavy police presence and advised drivers to consider alternate routes while assuring there was no threat to public safety. Gustavus St., east of Goderich St. in downtown Port Elgin was strewn with car parts and heavily damaged vehicles after what Saugeen Shores police called a serious motor vehicle collision Feb. 21 that remains under investigation with South Bruce OPP.
