A man from Hamilton is facing multiple charges after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that he drove a pickup truck with only three wheels along the QEW on New Year’s Eve.
Burlington OPP indicated they received initial calls around 11:20 p. m., as motorists noticed the severely damaged truck heading towards Toronto near Welland Avenue in St. Catharines.
Officers managed to stop the truck close to Bartlett Avenue in Grimsby, where they took the 47-year-old driver into custody. Authorities suspect he was impaired and later found his blood-alcohol level to be more than twice the legal limit, with OPP sharing images of empty beer cans discovered inside the vehicle.
An additional investigation uncovered that the man’s driver’s license had been suspended for nearly 25 years, going back to 2001.
He now faces several charges, including impaired operation, operating over 80, dangerous driving, and driving while suspended.
In a statement, the OPP expressed gratitude towards the “vast majority” of New Year’s Eve drivers who organized safe transportation and celebrated responsibly. They added that those choosing to drive impaired “will face severe consequences.”
