A teenage girl accused of killing another teen in Perth, Ont., last year has confessed in court. The girl, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged in the October 2024 death of 15-year-old Reese Stanzel. She was first charged with second-degree murder, but that was later changed to first-degree murder. According to a statement agreed upon and read in Ontario Superior Court of Justice late last month, the girl planned to kill Stanzel and lured him into the woods on the afternoon of Oct. 25, 2024. The girl hit Stanzel with a baseball bat, stabbed him with a hunting knife, and ran away. Stanzel died from his injuries, “his body left alone among the fallen leaves,” as stated in the document. “I hit his head. I killed him,” she wrote in a note found at her home. She also admitted to the murder when arrested by Ontario Provincial Police officers and indicated where they could find Stanzel’s body. When she was re-arrested under the new first-degree murder charge, “[she] showed concern for the victim’s family, saying she felt regret,” court heard. The Crown plans to ask for an adult sentence in this case, which is scheduled for sentencing discussions on Feb. 27.
