A teenage girl charged with killing another teen in Perth, Ont., last year has admitted her guilt in court.

The girl, whose identity remains confidential under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, faced charges in connection with the October 2024 death of 15-year-old Reese Stanzel.

She was first accused of second-degree murder but later had her charge upgraded to first-degree murder.

According to a statement read out in Ontario Superior Court late last month, the girl plotted to kill Stanzel and lured him into the woods of the city on the afternoon of October 25, 2024.

The girl hit Stanzel with a baseball bat, stabbed him with a hunting knife, and then ran away. He died from his injuries, “his body left alone among the fallen leaves,” as stated in the document.

“I hit his head. I killed him,” the girl wrote in a note found later at her home. She also confessed to the murder when arrested by Ontario Provincial Police and told them where they could find Stanzel’s body.

When she was re-arrested under the upgraded charge of first-degree murder, “[she] expressed empathy for the victim’s family, stating that she felt regret,” court heard.

The Crown plans to seek an adult sentence for this case, which will return to court for sentencing discussions on February 27.
