The Ontario Government has announced that construction is now in progress to elevate Highway 5 above Highway 6 at their intersection in the Waterdown area of Hamilton.
According to a news release from the ministry, this project at Clappison’s Corners aims to “reduce gridlock, improve road safety and keep people and goods moving.”
Their project website indicates that work started during the summer and is anticipated to be completed by winter 2030.
A new bridge will allow Highway 5 to cross over Highway 6, along with new on- and off-ramps designed for more efficient vehicle movement, the ministry explained.
This project will also include:
Resurfacing Highway 6 between the southern end of the new interchange and Highway 403. Widening sections of Highway 5 to six lanes while providing room for a possible extra southbound lane toward Highway 6. Constructing a new commuter parking facility. Adding multi-use paths on both sides of Dundas Street E. and Highway 5 between Clappison Avenue and Innovation Drive. Installing bike lanes on Highway 5 between Innovation Drive and Coreslab Drive. Enhancing drainage systems. Building new traffic lights and signals.
Highway 6 will be resurfaced between Highway 403 and the southern part of the interchange. (Ontario Ministry of Transportation)
Intersection Considered a ‘Local Bottleneck’
“Drivers in Hamilton and Burlington know how frustrating it can be to sit in traffic at Highways 5 and 6 in Waterdown,” Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, stated in a news release.
He mentioned that the new interchange would “make life easier” for “thousands” who travel this route daily.
For many years, this intersection has been labeled as a “local bottleneck,” according to Peter Smith, executive director of the Heavy Construction Association of Toronto. “Large trucks in the northbound lanes of Highway 6 approaching the intersection slow sharply due to the steep grade all while moving across three lanes of traffic to turn west.”
He added that this new interchange will “ease congestion and remove a major safety concern at the same time.”
‘Clear, Timely Updates’
Hamilton mayor-elect Keanin Loomis joined Sarkaria and local MPPs at a press conference on-site Friday.
“Looking forward to working with the Province to advance this project, while ensuring Hamiltonians receive clear, timely updates throughout construction,” he posted on Facebook Saturday.
The province stated that GIP Paving will handle building the new interchange. It noted that work would also include creating new municipal roads, water mains, and sanitary sewers.
According to their project website, Mountain Brow Road, Commercial Drive, Innovation Drive, Solar Drive extension, Sureres Drive, Clugston Avenue, and Parkside Drive are some roads that will be impacted.
