The road extension and bridge will link the City of Burlington with the Town of Oakville over Bronte Creek by extending Wyecroft Road from Burloak Drive in the west to Bronte Road in the east.
Halton Region entrusted WSP Canada with engineering for the project while Dufferin Construction received the building contract.
According to the Halton Region website, benefits of this project include:
Providing drivers with an additional route, reducing traffic congestion on local roads and the Queen Elizabeth Way. Cutting down commuting times to Appleby and Bronte GO stations. Linking nearby employment areas for easier access for business owners, employees, and customers. Offering alternative transportation options through new pedestrian pathways and cycling infrastructure. A new watermain that will support future growth while enhancing Oakville’s water supply.
Project improvements include:
A new four-lane roadway Bridge Maintaining clean drinking water Multi-use pathways New on-road bike lanes
This project traces back to 1994 when the Town of Oakville conducted its environmental assessment study. Regional funding was approved, design work commenced in 2019, with construction starting in fall 2023.
Halton Region secured $53.11 million from the Province of Ontario for this initiative.
Remaining tasks involve:
Removal of temporary traffic signals and installation of permanent ones at Bronte Road and Wyecroft Road. Final paving at westbound bridge along with intersection work at Bronte Road and Wyecroft Road. Pavement markings, railings, and other minor finishing touches.
Once it opens up, this extension and bridge are set to accommodate over 4,000 trips each day, about 2,000 vehicles during peak afternoon hours, which will help reduce congestion on QEW, Rebecca Street, and Lakeshore Road.
