Ontario’s solicitor general has expressed regret over an emergency alert that was sent throughout the province early Sunday morning, informing residents about a supposed incident at the Pickering nuclear generating station located east of Toronto.

“The alert was mistakenly issued to the public during a routine training exercise conducted by the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre,” Sylvia Jones stated in her remarks on Sunday.

Jones told that the alert system undergoes testing twice daily to ensure it is prepared for emergencies. During one of those tests, it appears someone accidentally activated the alert on a “live pathway” rather than using a “test pathway.”

Jones noted that determining who triggered the alert will be part of a broader investigation led by Emergency Management Ontario.

“There was no incident at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station that warranted public notification. Additionally, there was never any danger posed to the public or environment,” Jones added. “The government of Ontario sincerely apologizes for causing public concern and has initiated a full investigation to understand how this error occurred, ensuring steps are taken so it won’t happen again.”

Later on Sunday, OPG Chief Nuclear Officer Sean Granville issued a statement saying: “OPG has a comprehensive notification process ready to implement immediately if an incident were ever to occur at the station.”

“I want to reassure everyone that there was no incident at the station, and operations are proceeding as intended.”

Residents Find Reassurances Lacking

At 7:24 a. m. ET, an alert went out across the province claiming there had been an incident reported at the plant. It specified that residents within 10 kilometres of the facility were affected.

“The situation does NOT involve any abnormal release of radioactivity from the station and emergency personnel are responding,” read the message.

The alert indicated that people near the plant do not need to “take any protective actions at this time.”

About 40 minutes later, Ontario Power Generation clarified via Twitter that the initial alert was sent “in error.”

“There is no threat to public safety or environmental health,” OPG stated.

At 8:23 a. m., Premier Doug Ford’s office confirmed through email with CBC Toronto that an error had indeed been made with regard to the alert. The original notification came from the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre.

“No safety incident occurred and there’s no danger posed to anyone in public. The emergency notice was activated incorrectly,” said Kayla Iafelice, spokesperson for Premier Ford’s office. More information would follow.

At 9:12 a. m., nearly two hours after sending out its first warning, authorities dispatched another emergency message reassuring citizens about its mistake regarding earlier alerts.

“There is NO active nuclear situation taking place at Pickering Nuclear Generating Station,” read this second message. “The previous notice was mistakenly sent out. There’s no risk posed to anyone in public or environment. No further action is required.”

The City of Pickering also tweeted clarifying that their earlier message contained errors. We have confirmed that there is no emergency or incident at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station and there’s no threat to anyone in our community. This series of messages correcting their mistakes provided little comfort for local residents who felt alarmed over potential dangers nearby.

Mayors Call for Comprehensive Review

On Sunday afternoon, Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan expressed his frustration over receiving such an erroneous warning and joined forces with Toronto Mayor John Tory urging for thorough investigations into what happened.
