Elizabeth Roy has successfully won a second term as the mayor of Whitby, defeating council opponent Chris Leahy by over 3,000 votes in a fiercely contested and at times harsh race.

Roy remarked to her supporters after the win that her opponent’s tactics leading up to Monday’s election “turned into a Trump campaign,” as she received another four-year mandate to steer one of Ontario’s fastest-growing communities and continue building on the progress made during her first term.

“I am deeply honoured and grateful that the people of Whitby have placed their trust in me once again,” said Roy. “Serving as mayor of the town I love is the privilege of a lifetime. I am incredibly excited to continue the work we’ve started together.”

During her initial term as mayor, Roy stated that the town saw “significant progress” on various priorities highlighted by Whitby residents. This includes delivering Whitby’s first Community Strategic Plan in over 20 years, shaped by feedback from thousands of residents, securing provincial support for a new hospital in Whitby, continuing advocacy for essential investments needed to move the project forward into construction, advancing new safety tools and initiatives (including a new traffic calming strategy, updated school zone enforcement measures and a new fire station in West Whitby), welcoming new businesses, opening the Fieldgate Sports Complex and announcing plans for an extensive outdoor sports field complex spanning over 60 hectares, pushing ahead with waterfront revitalization efforts while minimizing property tax hikes.

In her upcoming term, Roy emphasizes engaging residents in creating a new 2026-2030 Community Strategic Plan. She aims to ensure that the newly formed council-featuring three fresh faces-has a clear roadmap driven by community input for the next four years.

Roy also stressed the importance of collaboration.

“Whether you voted for me or supported another candidate, I want you to know that I will continue working hard for you. Elections are an opportunity to debate ideas and different visions for our community. Now it is time to come together and focus on the future we all share,” she said. “Thank you, Whitby. Let’s keep moving forward, together.”
