In a troubling case across several Ontario cities, Richard Neil is on trial in Brampton for allegedly sexually assaulting three children during the 1990s. The incidents started in August 1992 near Idlewood Park in Kitchener, where an 8-year-old boy was said to have been lured into the woods and assaulted. This case falls under ‘Project Woodland,’ which connected later assaults, including one involving a 10-year-old boy in Brampton in 1994 and a 15-year-old girl in Oakville in 1995, using DNA evidence.
Now aged 67, Neil was apprehended in British Columbia back in March 2024. He faces a total of 17 charges and has pleaded not guilty while taking the stand to defend himself. His lawyer, Leo Adler, pointed out that the focus of the case is on identifying who is responsible rather than debating whether or not the assaults took place. As the trial moves forward, the Crown has called many witnesses including police officers and DNA experts.
