Sage Neptune Miracula, a Grade 2 student, wants to use their role as mayor to bring joy to people.
“If we make Toronto a funner place … be creative, then we could have a fun, beautiful city,” Sage said.
Ellis Torres, a Grade 8 student, is inspired by his experiences traveling around Toronto with his family.
“Every time we’re on the 401, or just any highway … it’s always just packed and we’re late for appointments and anything really,” he shared.
Grade 9 student Erich Tigcal came up with her winning idea after reflecting on her time spent with friends outside of school.
“I noticed that there are a lot of artistic people everywhere and they should be encouraged,” she said. “Sometimes I can’t really do anything but go to the mall.”
Umme Habiba, in Grade 10, was inspired by the conversations happening around her.
“I was seeing all these good ideas that young people had, so I wanted to create a system where they could all be heard,” Habiba explained.
Here are the four winning student essays:

If I were mayor, I’d paint every TTC bus and subway and streetcar pink to make our city look extra special and brighten people’s days when they’re feeling down.
I’d also like changing screens on the TTC instead of ads. These screens could change depending on the weather.
On hot days, it would show a sun and on cold days snowflakes or pictures of ice; I believe this art would enhance how nice the TTC looks. At night it could display phases of the moon.

My second idea is for the Canadian National Exhibition (the CNE) to remain open all year round. In winter we could cover it with a giant dome like those used over tennis courts.
This would allow us to invite small businesses along with hot tub shops where people can purchase hot tubs. We could also have themes for different holidays or special events so there’s something for everyone!</m
The food offerings could vary throughout the year-for instance pumpkin dishes in fall and warm soup in winter. It shouldn’t cost small businesses much to set up shop there so we can have plenty for everyone in Toronto!</m
I want Toronto to be fun and beautiful for all its residents!</m
