WOLFE ISLAND – At the end of a muddy trail, barely wide enough for a four-wheel-drive truck, lies the MV William Darrell in a small cove, its shoreline tangled with vines and overgrowth.
This 20-metre-long, eight-metre-wide ferry boat looks out of place tied up in the weeds at this quiet little cove near Point Alexandria, which is the southernmost point of Wolfe Island. It’s ready to take off across the water that marks where Canada ends and the United States begins.
Built in 1952, the boat is named after the Horne brothers, William and Darrell, who ran it back then – two members of a long line of Hornes that have transported people across these international waters between Wolfe Island, Ontario, and Cape Vincent, New York for five generations.
