Former Kingston Police sergeant Jason Alblas will not serve time in jail but will have a criminal record after a judge turned down both the Crown’s request for a prison sentence and the defense’s plea for a conditional discharge related to his assault on a female constable under his supervision.
In a ruling issued Thursday at Napanee’s Ontario Court of Justice, Justice Geoffrey Griffin handed down a suspended sentence that includes 18 months of probation and 100 hours of community service. Alblas is also required to attend counseling as directed, maintain no direct or indirect contact with the complainant, and keep at least 250 meters away from her.
This decision concludes sentencing proceedings that required Griffin to balance the serious breach of trust by a senior police officer against the rehabilitation and personal effects faced by someone whose career in policing lasted more than twenty years.
