According to Oakville Fire, no injuries were reported after a fire broke out in the electrical room of an apartment building, causing damages estimated between $50,000 and $100,000.
The alarm was triggered at 1:17 a. m. on Wednesday by the building’s notification fire alarm located at 80 Speers Rd.
Firefighters managed to contain and put out the blaze within the electrical room; however, there was heavy smoke in the basement and some minor smoke spread through the lower floors of the building.
The team noted that power is currently disconnected at 80 Speers, while electricity to 20 Speers, 30 Speers, and 50 Speers roads was shut off during the incident.
An investigation is underway, with Oakville Hydro present on site waiting for the Electrical Safety Authority to determine if power can be safely restored to the building.
During the fire, firefighters partially evacuated residents from the building and they are now being assisted by fire and police personnel as they return to their units.
If power cannot be restored soon, Red Cross will step in to help find temporary housing for those displaced residents.
