A two-year-old girl suffered critical injuries when a driver hit a daycare worker along with four other children crossing the street in Oshawa on Wednesday, according to police.
The accident took place around 9:20 a. m. in a neighborhood at Niagara Drive and Sheridan Street, close to Taunton Road W. and Simcoe Street N., as reported by Durham Regional Police.
The girl was first taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to a trauma center in Toronto, Sgt. Nicholas Gluckstein informed reporters.
Ornge, an ambulance service, stated it transported one patient to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. The girl is currently stable, according to police.
Authorities mentioned that both the daycare worker and one child were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Three additional children were treated for minor injuries. Gluckstein noted that the youngest child in this group is just seven months old while the oldest is three years old.
In a news release on Wednesday, police revealed that the driver involved was a 62-year-old woman who was traveling south on Niagara Drive in a white Volvo sedan when she turned left onto Sheridan Street and struck the group. They indicated that there are no traffic controls at Niagara Drive.
As per police reports, the daycare worker and children were crossing northward on the east sidewalk of the street.
“The person driving southbound, there are no stop signs for them to potentially stop and take a look around there. But five children and an adult female crossing the road is a pretty large sight to see,” Gluckstein said.
He added that authorities have “no indication” suggesting that the driver was impaired at the time of the incident.
Police confirmed that the driver remained at the scene and was also taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
Investigators are currently reviewing local security footage to see if speed or distracted driving contributed to this collision.
There’s no update regarding potential charges yet.
“Police are still investigating the circumstances of the collision,” officials stated in their release.
