With the future of the Canadian automotive industry in doubt, a new book explores Canada’s long-standing relationship with cars to provide insights into what might come next.
Car Nation Canada: An Illustrated History, examines the social and economic shifts that have influenced Canada’s affection for – and reliance on – automobiles, which are the main form of transportation for four out of five Canadians.
Utilizing over 100 archival images, author Dimitry Anastakis claims that cars were much more than just consumer goods; they represented Canada’s transition into “modernity,” fundamentally changing how cities are structured and how Canadians view their own freedom and cultural identity.
