This year, Thanksgiving will be observed on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, and many businesses and services will be closed in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Halton, Durham, Niagara and various other towns and cities across Ontario.
Thanksgiving has been recognized as a holiday in Canada since Nov. 6, 1879, generally occurring on the second Monday of October.
On Jan. 31, 1957, Vincent Massey, the Governor General of Canada, made an official statement saying, “A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed to be observed on the second Monday in October.”
Thanksgiving is considered a statutory holiday throughout most of the country; however, it is optional in the Atlantic provinces including Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Here’s what you can expect to find open or closed on Thanksgiving Monday:
Mississauga
In Mississauga on Oct. 12, several places will remain open including Square One Shopping Centre (featuring Walmart Supercentre along with Food District and Rec Room), Whole Foods Square One, T& T Supermarket as well as many cafes and restaurants that usually operate on Mondays (it’s best to call ahead). Smaller grocery stores like Rabba locations will also be open along with most Shoppers Drug Mart outlets, YMCA locations, movie theatres, grocery storesand numerous gas stations and convenience stores.
However all government offices at every level including City Hall will close their doors. Non-emergency services managed by Region of Peel are also off-duty alongside most major grocery stores as well as key shopping malls such as Erin Mills Town Centre, Dixie Outlet Mall, and Heartland Town Centre. Other closures include Canada Post (no mail pick-up or delivery), banks, libraries community centres , all LCBO and Beer Store outlets plus the 311 citizen contact centre service.
If you’re commuting today, note that GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule while Mi Way follows its regular Sunday schedule. The Trans Help office operated by Region of Peel remains shut but service runs from 6 a. m.-1 a. m. on Monday , Oct.12.

Brampton residents can head over to Bramalea City Centre along with most Shoppers Drug Mart spots, some smaller grocery stores like Rabba, movie theatres, some recreational facilities (call ahead) , YMCA facilities, and plenty of cafes, bars, and restaurants typically operating Mondays (again it’s smart to check first). Parks, trails, and outdoor spaces remain accessible.
You should keep in mind that Shoppers World will not open its doors today along with most major grocery retailers, banks, libraries(all Brampton Library branches are closed Sunday through Monday), animal services plus all non-essential federal, state regional, and local government offices(including City Hall). Also closed are all LCBOs , Beer Store locations , Canada Post(no mail pickup/delivery)and PAMA(the Peel Art Gallery, Museum & Archives).
Brampton Transit operates according to a Sunday timetable while major transit terminals-including access to lost-and-found-will be shut down completely. All Trans Help requests needing trips scheduled for either Oct.12 or Oct.13 must occur before 7 p. m. on Oct.11. GO Transit adheres strictly to its Saturday schedule today.

Halton – Oakville, Burlington Milton & Halton Hills
On Thanksgiving day locals within Halton area may enjoy visiting nearby parks along with certain outdoor recreation sites.
