MARKHAM, ON – August 29, 2022 – On Saturday, August 27th, the City of Markham dedicated a street in the Robinson Glen community to renowned international music director and lyricist, A. R. Rahman. The multiple Academy Award and Grammy Award winner was in the GTHA area for a concert. A. R. Rahman Street will serve as an East-West collector road situated in the future Robinson Glen community, located North East of Kennedy Road and Major Mackenzie Drive East. Markham Council had previously approved the name to be added to the list of roads set for dedication.
“As Canada’s most diverse city, the City of Markham is thrilled to honor such an incredibly talented and globally recognized artist,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “A. R. Rahman has visited our region numerous times and holds a special place in the hearts of many within our South Asian community.”
Allah-Rakha Rahman, known as A. R. Rahman, is celebrated worldwide as a music composer whose extensive work in film and stage has earned him the title “the Mozart of Madras.” He is best known for creating the soundtrack for the 2008 blockbuster film, Slumdog Millionaire. Additionally, A. R. Rahman has received various international humanitarian awards for causes he deeply cares about.
In 2009, A. R. Rahman made it onto Time Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people and continues to be a leading music figure across borders after more than thirty years in his career. He has been honored with one of India’s highest civilian accolades and famously composed India’s national song on its 50th Anniversary of independence. The original track he created also holds two Guinness World Records for being performed in the most languages. For his significant contributions to music, he has received numerous honorary doctorates from prestigious universities around the globe.
