This October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) is urging eligible residents in Simcoe-Muskoka to arrange their breast cancer screenings and keep up with regular mammograms.
Self-care often brings to mind activities that allow us to unwind and refresh, but some of the most vital self-care actions are those that safeguard our health.
Breast cancer screening falls into this category.
Screening for breast cancer is an essential preventive health action that can help spot cancer early, before any symptoms show up. Regular mammograms can detect breast cancer sooner when treatment options tend to be more effective and outcomes are generally better.
Even with the advantages of routine screenings, one-third of eligible individuals in Simcoe-Muskoka have not kept current with their breast cancer screening. For individuals aged 50 to 74 who are at average risk, it’s recommended to have screenings every two years through Ontario’s organized program.
“We understand that many people in our community aren’t up to date on their breast screening, and we want to change that,” says Dana Naylor, vice-president, clinical; regional vice-president, Cancer Services, Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario). “This year marks five years since I was declared cancer-free, and I’m extremely thankful my breast cancer was discovered during my very first screening mammogram.
“That experience really highlighted how crucial early detection can be. I know life gets busy and there are always competing priorities, but taking time for your screening could truly make a difference,” Naylor added.
People aged 40 to 74 who qualify can book a publicly funded mammogram through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) without needing a referral from a doctor or nurse practitioner. The ability to self-refer makes it simpler for eligible individuals to get screened at various locations throughout Simcoe-Muskoka, including RVH.
This month, take some time for yourself and ensure you’re current with your screenings. A mammogram appointment lasts about an hour but could benefit your health for many years ahead.
