An 11-year-old girl has lost her life in a house fire in Richmond Hill, Ont., which is currently being treated as a suspected arson.

York Regional Police Chief Jim Mac Sween confirmed her death on Wednesday, just days after the blaze tore through a home, resulting in five individuals being hospitalized.

At around 3:15 a. m. on September 1, emergency services responded to reports of a house fire on Skywood Drive, located south of Bathurst Street and King Road.

Police reported that five people were taken to the hospital; three of them were initially thought to have life-threatening injuries but were later all listed in critical condition. Mac Sween stated on Wednesday that the four other victims are still in hospital and remain in critical condition.

Jim Kettles, an operations manager with the Office of the Fire Marshal, shared with reporters at the scene that Richmond Hill firefighters had to rescue four people from inside the home.
