On Wednesday, Sept. 30, various government offices and services will be closed to honor the sixth annual National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
This day will affect banks, Canada Post, and some non-essential government services; however, most private businesses will continue their regular hours since the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is not a statutory holiday.
On this day, most shopping centers, grocery stores, movie theaters, and restaurants will operate as they normally do. Schools-including colleges, universities, and childcare facilities-will also remain open.
The day was first established in 2021 when the Canadian government responded to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s call to action by creating an observance aimed at honoring First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals who faced hardships due to the country’s residential school system.
Parliament officially declared the day after passing relevant legislation on June 3, 2021.
National Truth & Reconciliation Day coincides with Orange Shirt Day-a movement inspired by Phyllis Webstad, a survivor of residential schools.
Here’s what you can expect to be open or closed in southern Ontario on Sept. 30:
Mississauga
All City of Mississauga offices will close on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Closed offices include the 311 Citizen Contact Centre, Animal Services, community centers, legislative services, Mississauga Seniors’ Centre, City Centre Transit Terminal information booth as well as Adamson Estate and Benares Historic House.

The Bradley Museum will welcome visitors interested in learning about Indigenous Peoples’ history in Mississauga on Sept. 30. Staff will also discuss what actions the City is taking today towards furthering Reconciliation along with the 94 Calls to Action. Tours are scheduled every half hour between noon and four p. m., walk-ins are welcome but reservations are suggested.
The flag of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation will be raised at Celebration Square while the Civic Centre clock tower will glow orange that evening.
The digital screens at Celebration Square will display highlights from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and showcase the City’s commitment to Reconciliation.
The following Region of Peel non-emergency services are closed on Wednesday, Sept. 30:
Dental Services Contact Centre and Dental Clinics Early Years and Child Care Services Family Health Call Centre Healthy sexuality clinics Housing services Harm Reduction Program – Mobile Van Ontario Works Service Peel counters Service Ontario counter
No changes are expected for transit service.
Brampton
All essential services (like Brampton Fire and Emergency Services) will remain operational. Service Brampton is available around-the-clock-including holidays-but only urgent service requests can be handled between midnight and seven a. m.
Brampton Transit is set to run on a typical weekday schedule on Sept. 30. Customer Service counters at terminals will stay open while both Clark Facility and Sandalwood Facility (including lost-and-found counters) will close for the day.
Parks within Brampton such as city trails playgrounds-and off-leash dog parks-will be accessible for residents too.
Brampton Recreation facilities plan to operate during regular hours with all scheduled programs continuing as planned.
Brampton Library branches won’t be open; however staff have prepared lists featuring recommended reading materials.
The Brampton Animal Shelter won’t be accepting visitors but Animal Services officers will patrol areas while responding to emergency calls after hours.
