This weekend, several universities in Ontario, including the University of Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, are hosting homecoming events. However, police and school officials are reminding students and alumni to prioritize safety.

For alumni, it’s a great chance to return to their old campus, enjoy a football game, and reconnect with friends.

Current students celebrate differently, which has raised safety concerns in the past according to their schools, local authorities, and law enforcement.

Wilfrid Laurier University mentioned in a statement to that they have organized several events for both alumni and students listed on their Laurier Homecoming 2026 website.

“The safety and well-being of our students, neighbours and community partners is our top priority. We work closely with the City of Waterloo, Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) and emergency services partners to support a safe and welcoming Homecoming for our entire community,” said the statement.

“Laurier has implemented additional safety and security measures for Homecoming, including hiring private security, installing fencing, and implementing a zero-guest policy in student residences. We also actively discourage students from participating in large unsanctioned gatherings. The university shares information about fines for violations of municipal bylaws and highlights potential sanctions under the Non-Academic Student Code of Conduct.”

Police state there will be an increased presence around the University District and uptown Waterloo throughout the weekend.

Extra emergency crews available

In Guelph, celebrations include a football game scheduled for Saturday at 1 p. m.

Previously after the football game, Chancellors Way was known as a hotspot where thousands of students gathered.

A couple of years ago during homecoming that area experienced an unsanctioned party where fireworks were set off and unfortunately someone was stabbed amidst the crowd.

Scott Tracey from Guelph Police Service mentions that extra officers along with fire crews, paramedics, bylaw officers, and campus safety staff will be present “to ensure those celebrating are able to do so safely.”

“We do see social gatherings in various locations but primarily house parties throughout the city,” said Tracey.

<p"But over recent years Chancellors Way has had one of the highest concentrations of people during this time. Therefore many of our resources will be focused there if things unfold like they have recently."

Tracey assures that emergency services will be ready to assist anyone needing help across the city during these celebrations.
