Quebec’s current premier expressed she is “very concerned” about the potential for U. S. interference in the provincial election.
Coalition Avenir Québec Leader Christine Fréchette shared with reporters that she reached out to Prime Minister Mark Carney, asking for a meeting to talk about this issue.
This came after a news report from Québecor media outlets claimed that American officials had tried to negotiate directly with Quebec government representatives over tariffs.
“I want to ensure that the full truth about this issue comes to light,” Fréchette stated on the campaign trail. “[The election] must remain in the hands of and be decided by the people of Quebec.”
Canada’s foreign affairs minister, Anita Anand, mentioned at a press conference in Ottawa that the federal government is taking this matter very seriously.
“Protecting our democracy is of the utmost importance to our country,” she said.
She added that she doesn’t think there’s anything currently affecting Canada’s democracy, but when she “sees something,” she discusses it with her counterparts, including U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Right now I do not have proof,” she said.
