Two men aged 23 and a 17-year-old are facing charges related to a video that surfaced online, showing someone shouting about having a gun at a theatre in Whitby.
The footage, shared online, seems to capture the moment when a person yelled they had a gun while inside a packed Whitby cinema. According to Durham police, this was done as part of an attempt to record reactions for social media.
This incident took place around 11:20 p. m. on March 17 at Landmark Cinemas on Consumers Drive, leading to the arrest of three individuals.
As of Tuesday, the video uploaded to You Tube has garnered over 600,000 views.
In the clip, someone can be heard yelling, “He’s not kidding; he has a gun,” within the theatre.
Later in the footage, those involved are seen talking with police officers outside the cinema.
According to a news release from police on Tuesday, the shouting caused patrons to exit the theatre.
“Officers arrived on scene and were directed toward three males who had left the theatre.”
Police mentioned that they found out later that these individuals had staged the disturbance.
“Further investigation revealed that the males were creating social media content and had intentionally created a false disturbance to generate a reaction they could film,” read the news release.
Three residents from Ajax-two men aged 23 and one 17-year-old-were charged as a result.
They face charges including causing a disturbance and mischief.
