The teams led by Pätz and Casper won their titles at the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard, which is part of a new Satellite Events series aimed at helping teams qualify for the Grand Slam of Curling via established tour stops.
Pätz overcame Team Xenia Schwaller with a score of 6-4, while Casper triumphed over Team Jordon Mc Donald with a 9-5 victory during the finals held on Monday in Oakville, Ontario. They are the first to earn qualification for the GSOC Open.
This fourth event of the Grand Slam of Curling season will take place from December 1-6 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It will feature 16 teams across both men’s and women’s divisions: the top 12 teams based on world rankings as of November 3, along with two sponsors’ exemptions and two qualifiers from Satellite Events.
If Casper and Pätz keep their positions within the top 12 by the qualification deadline, any available spots from the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard will be allocated to other high-performing teams from this event that aren’t ranked in the top 12.
The Henderson Metal Fall Classic scheduled for October 21-24 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, as well as the Swiss Chalet Women’s Curling Stadium Spiel set for November 6-8 in North Bay, Ontario, will determine who fills those final two Satellite Events spots for GSOC Open.
Pätz Outplays Schwaller for Another Title
Even though it’s only mid-September and just starting an Olympic quad cycle, there’s already some rivalry building between Pätz and Schwaller.
Their Swiss teams met again in a tour final early this season, and once more Pätz managed to beat Schwaller to take home the trophy.
Sophia never fell behind until seventh end when Pätz took charge at 5-4 after scoring two points with a tap shot.
This still gave Schwaller – reigning world champion – an opportunity to use her hammer in that last frame. She attempted a risky move with her final shot aiming to hit off her own stone positioned at the top of the house while rolling into position to possibly remove Pätz’s rock and win. Unfortunately for her team, her shooter landed right on target without moving Pätz’s rock which secured another point for her opponent.
Pätz entered this week ranked No. 6 globally and has had an impressive start since returning as skip after spending eight seasons throwing last rocks and acting as vice for Silvana Tirinzoni. Her Geneva-based club team includes third Selina Witschonke, second Stefanie Berset, and lead Renée Frigo; they finished with a strong record of 6-1 at Euro Super Series three weeks back in Stirling, Scotland-culminating in an exciting come-from-behind win against Schwaller with an ending score of 8-5 during finals.
Pätz’s team faced only one loss throughout their time in Oakville; they were defeated by Team Kayla Skrlik early on (6-4) during triple knockout stages but then bounced back strongly winning five straight matches leading up to finals-this included wins against Team Carly Howard during quarterfinals and fellow Swiss squad Team Corrie Hürlimann during semifinals earlier Monday afternoon.
Sweater’s squad also started off very well this season-their two losses against Pätz remain their only setbacks thus far. Following defeat at Stirling finals match-up; Zurich-based Schwaller alongside third Selina Gafner plus second Fabienne Rieder & lead Selina Rychiger went undefeated going through KW Fall Classic held last weekend achieving remarkable results finishing up round-robin play unscathed (7-0).
The team qualified A-side spot within Oakville brackets too securing victories over Team Giulia Zardini Lacedelli (quarterfinals) followed by beating Team Sherry Middaugh (semifinals) setting them up perfectly against Pätz once more!
Schwaller has made quite impressive progress climbing quickly now resting comfortably ranked No.2 worldwide-a rapid advancement indeed coming off successful reign dominating throughout competitive scene since clinching gold medal victory previously noted February World Junior Championship title! After triumphantly overcoming Olympic silver medallist squad comprising Tirinzoni last year within national championship bracket; Team Schwaller impressively carried momentum forward onto women’s worlds defeating Canadian rivals Einarson ultimately claiming ultimate glory!
While it seems like currently favor sits mainly towards experienced skip residing under banner representing Switzerland whose previous accolades include gold medal achievements gained competing back when she led national unit across women’s worlds journey all leading back into year ’15-it feels clear such rivalry won’t simply fade away anytime soon as many expectations rest ahead spanning next four years
