The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) teamed up with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) to carry out a safety check on commercial vehicles, resulting in charges against 30 drivers and 19 trucks being taken off the road.

On September 15, OPS focused on the south end of Ottawa and inspected a total of 71 trucks. Out of these, 19 were taken off the road due to safety-related issues, and one trailer plate was removed because it was deemed unfit.

The trucks were pulled from service for issues such as:

Defective brakes Improper driver’s licences Improper tires Improper safety chains Inoperative directional or brake lamps Damaged bearings Load security issues Damaged suspension, including a cracked leaf spring

Charges were filed for violations related to Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR), permits, missing daily trip inspection reports, improper driver’s licences, load security concerns, overweight vehicles, major defects, and absent annual inspection certificates.

Ensuring commercial vehicles are safe, drivers are properly licensed, and loads are secure is vital for road safety. The MTO and OPS will keep conducting focused enforcement efforts to maintain safety on Ottawa’s roads.
