Ontario’s English Catholic teachers are set to hold a strike vote this November since negotiations haven’t progressed beyond the initial phase.
The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association shared with its members today that this strike vote aims to signal to the government that real progress needs to be made at the bargaining table.
The union mentioned that it will conduct informational meetings about the strike vote before the voting days on Nov. 12 and 13, ensuring members have all they need to “deliver a strong strike mandate.”
President Rene Jansen in de Wal clarified that scheduling a strike vote doesn’t guarantee a strike will occur.
Negotiations among major education unions have stalled as the Ontario Labour Relations Board reviews which topics should be negotiated centrally between unions and the province, versus those handled locally by school boards.
Unions accuse Education Minister Paul Calandra of moving local issues into central discussions, including specific working conditions.
