Ontario’s police oversight agency has stepped in after a car evaded police in Saugeen Shores on Christmas Day and crashed into a residence, injuring a female passenger seriously.
A person inside the house also suffered minor injuries from the accident, which took place on Bricker Street in Port Elgin.
The Saugeen Shores Police Service stated in a news release that an officer on routine patrol attempted to pull over a vehicle for traffic violations around 2:30 p. m. on Saturday.
The vehicle then sped away from police, according to the official statement.
Due to the injuries caused by the crash, the province’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into the situation. This independent government body investigates police actions that could lead to death, serious injury, sexual assault, or firearm discharge at individuals.
Following the incident, police charged a 46-year-old man without a permanent address with fleeing from law enforcement, two counts of dangerous driving resulting in bodily harm, failing to adhere to a release order, two counts of operating while prohibited under the Criminal Code, two counts of driving with a suspended license, and not stopping at a stop sign.
