ALEXANDER, James “Jim” Arthur – It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Jim’s passing on July 28, 2026, at the age of 81. He was a loving husband to Erika Alexander. A caring father to Peter Alexander and Andrea Lamont (Jason). Proud grandfather to William Alexander, Vanessa Duncan, and Hannah and Charlie Lamont. Jim was born as the third child out of 16 siblings on October 10, 1944, to James and Josephine Alexander. He is survived by his dear siblings Anna Lee Benjamin (Jack), Ralph (Ruby) Alexander, Patrice Alexander, Kevin (Nancy) Alexander, Marion Alexander, Jeff (Janice) Alexander, Kathie Alexander, Marg Alexander (Gerry), Christopher Alexander, and Heather Lynn Alexander. He was predeceased by sisters Sharon Adams, Fran Cushnie, Jacqueline Baker and brothers Michael Alexander and Gerald Alexander. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews along with their spouses and children as well as numerous cousins and friends.
Jim served with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment from 1960-1970 where he got to know Niagara-on-the-Lake through summers spent at regimental encampments on the Commons. In 1972, he moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake with Erika after graduating from the Ontario College of Art where they found affordable housing. Soon after that, he dove into his career in advertising and design which eventually led him to start his own company – The Third Dimension. His love for their first home on Luther Ave., history, architectural detail, woodworking skills along with a deep appreciation for this unique community guided him toward becoming a homebuilder specializing in heritage consulting work including cabinetmaking as well as restoration & preservation projects.
His contributions included work for federal and provincial governments designing educational displays at locations such as Fort George, Merrickville, Ottawa Locks, Trent-Severn Waterway, Fort St. Joseph, Point Pelee National Park , Fort Malden , and the Canadian War Museum. Locally he worked on restoring key architectural elements for significant historic properties throughout Old Town , Queenston , St. Davids , St. Catharines , and Niagara Falls. He also taught adult night courses in photography along with creating stained glass windows.
He actively participated in several professional organizations such as the Canadian Association of Heritage Consultants , Community Heritage Ontario , and Association of Preservation Technology International.
Jim played an important role within his community helping establish or chair various local organizations including:
Founding Committee Chairman of The Friends of Fort George along with being an active member on all committees while also serving pancakes at site events from 1986-2020;
Canada Day Celebrations running from 1989-2019; New Year’s Day Levee
-Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake UNESCO Committee since its inception in 2018
-Niagara-on-the-Lake War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee spanning years from 2010-2015
-Simcoe’s Landing starting back in1992
-Local Architectural Committee between1988-1994
-Steering Committee member designated towards making Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake recognized nationally under Historic Sites & Monuments Board
-Scouts Canada Cub/Scout Leader active during years1974-1988 earning long service medal awarded by them in1986
-Paul Harris Fellow through Lewiston/Queenston Rotary Club awarded back in1985 while being founding member establishing Rotary Club here within town founded around1993.
-Co-founder committee forming Willowbank School focusing restoration initiatives dating back towards2001.
For his involvement within these communities he received recognition awards such as:
-Living Landmark Award given out by The Niagara Foundation last received back during2022
-Named Citizen Of The Year honored upon him through Niagara-On-The-Lake back when it occurred during1993
-Presented Commemorative Medal recognizing125th Anniversary Confederation across Canada received previously around1992
-Heart Of Gold award bestowed upon him from Air Canada noticed earlier around1988
-Long Service Award acknowledged via Ontario Heritage Foundation received prior mentioned honors before reaching recent accomplishments mentioned above!
One thing he felt proudest about besides seeing success come forth among children/grandchildren would have been ongoing44-year project dedicated building dream home reflecting efforts collecting/recycling materials still holding character! Bricks originally belonging off King Street Courthouse’s outbuilding alongside floors/celling/beams crafted using old growth wood served previous purposes ! So delighted recognition came forth shown courtesy Town acknowledging achieved status placing heritage designation noted down within2024!
An artist/craftsman gifted imagination bringing vision life turning ideas reality enjoyed facing challenges created fulfilling objectives getting things done!
Family/friends will truly miss contagious enthusiasm sense humor drive bringing changes about!
