The probe into a deadly trailer fire at a Port Elgin motel on January 6 is still ongoing.
Saugeen Shores police and Ontario Fire Marshall investigators returned the Maplewood Motel trailer to the owner on February 8 after finishing their investigations at the scene and boarding up the trailer, which doesn’t appear to have significant exterior damage. Neighbors mentioned that the victim had resided in the land-lease trailer, one of twelve located behind the motel, for several years.
*** Nearly two years ago, a 39-year-old man with no permanent address was charged with arson for causing extensive damage to three rooms at the Maplewood Motel.
When emergency crews arrived on February 27, 2022, they discovered flames erupting from the front door and attic of one unit. Everyone was safely evacuated, and damages were limited to three rooms.
