It’s been a quarter of a century since Kathleen Mac Vicar was last seen, and investigators are still working hard to find out who is responsible for her death.

To help crack the case, the Ontario Provincial Police has put out a new video retracing Mac Vicar’s last known movements, hoping it will spark new tips and bring closure to her family.

The story goes back to early 2001 when 19-year-old Mac Vicar moved from her hometown of Glace Bay, N. S., to Ontario to start fresh.

At that time, she was living with her aunt and uncle at Canadian Forces Base Trenton. She had only been there for about six months when tragedy struck.

On June 13, 2001, around 10 p. m., Mac Vicar left home on the base to visit a friend. While she was there, she made a phone call but didn’t tell her friend who it was.

After hanging up, her friend remembered seeing Mac Vicar leave and head down York Crescent toward Creswell Drive.

Around 11 p. m., another person spotted Mac Vicar walking near Byron and Campbell Street, heading east toward Curtis Road.

Just two days later, at about 9:45 a. m., a lawn maintenance worker from CFB Trenton found her body in a wooded area off Curtis Road. This spot was only a short distance from where her aunt and uncle lived.

Investigators say that Mac Vicar suffered multiple stab wounds and an autopsy revealed that she had also been sexually assaulted. The weapon used has never been found either at the scene or elsewhere.

“I have missed her for 25 years and watching who she would have become. I can’t believe the person who did this has got to live 25 years. I want my daughter back. I want those years back. I want her never to be in fear,” said Mac Vicar’s mother, Colleen Mac Vicar in a supplied statement.

A memorial sits at the place where she was discovered with a photo of her in her graduation gown.

Along with the video release, investigators are optimistic that advancements in DNA technology could also play a role in solving this case.

“Advancements in DNA technology continue to provide new opportunities in historical investigations, and we remain committed to leveraging every available tool to identify the person responsible for Kathleen’s murder. The OPP would like nothing more than to solve this case and bring resolution to Kathleen’s family,” said OPP Det.-Insp. Jennifer Patton from the criminal investigations branch (CIB), which continues actively pursuing all leads regarding what happened to Mac Vicar.

“Over the past 25 years, the OPP has spoken to dozens of persons of interest, pursued every tip received and continues to follow all viable investigative leads. Kathleen’s life mattered; her death matters; and we are committed to providing answers to Kathleen’s family,” said retired OPP inspector Christina Reive.

She mentioned that being located in Trenton-a rural community-homicides and violent crimes are quite rare here.

“Generally, we know who did it. There’s a smoking gun. Possibly even the suspect’s still on scene. And there are very few violent crimes like this anyways,” said Reive in the video. “With this particular one being a young girl new to the community who lived a normal low-risk lifestyle-we had no indication who could have done this or any reason behind it.”

Investigators believe there are individuals out there with knowledge about Mac Vicar’s death and they will persistently pursue answers.

A joint reward totaling $75 ,000 is still offered for information leading directlyto an arrestand conviction relatedto Mac Vicar’sdeath. The reward consists of$50 ,000fromthe Governmentof Ontarioand$25 ,000fromthe Cityof Quinte West.

Anyone with informationonthis investigationis askedtocontactthe OPPat1-888-310-1122.
