Early voting numbers for two of Ontario’s three byelections are slightly lower compared to last year’s quick provincial election, with early signs pointing to Scarborough Southwest as the most interesting contest.
Data released by Elections Ontario shows the number of early ballots submitted in Scarborough Southwest, Hamilton East-Stoney Creek, and York-Simcoe.
In Scarborough, 5.2 per cent of voters participated early, up from five per cent last year. Hamilton saw a turnout of 5.1 per cent, down from 6.1 per cent during the provincial election.

The turnout for the York-Simcoe byelection has dropped more noticeably in early figures, going from 7.2 per cent to 4.4 per cent. The three byelections were called following two retirements and one party switch. In February, Ontario NDP deputy leader Doly Begum left her seat at Queen’s Park to join the federal Liberal Party and ran successfully for a position on Parliament Hill.
