Starting Friday, Aug. 21, drivers in Ottawa can speed up a bit, as speed limits rise to 110 km/h on certain sections of Highways 416 and 417.
This update is part of Ontario’s move to expand the 110 km/h speed limits across its highway system.
The new limit will be in effect on Highway 417 from the interchange with Highway 416/417 heading west to Highway 7, and also from Leitrim Road heading east to Ottawa Regional Road 174.
It will also apply on Highway 416 from Fallowfield Road down to just south of the Highway 416/417 interchange.

These changes that went into effect on Friday are the latest step in a gradual rollout that started back in June, with another round planned for Aug. 31.
According to the province, most of Ontario’s freeway network was designed to handle a safe speed limit of 110 km/h. They noted that this broader change could reduce travel time between Toronto and Ottawa by nearly half an hour.
By the end of September, it’s expected that almost 89 percent of the province’s highways will have a posted limit of 110 km/h.
