Peter Thorvald Knudsen has reached the end of a remarkable journey, only to start another.
Peter decided to leave this life with dignity and on his own terms through the MAID program, surrounded by his family in his lovely backyard garden under the caring guidance of Dr. Moorhouse.
His health significantly declined over recent weeks after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Even though his physical strength was fading and pain was increasing, his mind remained sharp until the very end. His family and friends find comfort in knowing he was at peace with his choice and is now resting.
The impact Peter made on his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and everyone he met speaks volumes about the life he led.
Born and raised in Pass Lake, Ontario, Peter began working in carpentry with his grandfather during his teenage years, helping to build and renovate many cottages at Silver Islet. At 15, he moved to Port Arthur for high school, where he started to show signs of his entrepreneurial spirit.
He managed to support himself through high school by doing chores for his host family. Eventually, he graduated and found a way to work on boats with the Seafarers Union-one year before he was legally allowed to do so. Peter took on various roles throughout his career, including managing the Millionaire Restaurant and working as a banker at Imperial Bank where he met Helen. He eventually transitioned into the industrial supply sector.
In 1971, Peter launched his “practice business,” Pet World and Poodle Salon after struggling to find a groomer for their new dog. True to form, this venture flourished beyond expectations. It evolved into much more than just a pet store and grooming service; it expanded to include boutique items, décor pieces, and gifts.
In 1973, Peter took another leap of faith by founding Equipment World Inc., starting out with a small loan from friends along with big dreams. He felt immense pride as the business grew under his leadership while being supported by an exceptional TEAM that he built around him. At some point during this journey, he also established Toros Truck & Trailer Supply which he operated for several years.
Peter became well-known for creating stunning landscaping around their home on Oliver Road. This beautiful garden became a welcoming spot shared generously over time-with participation in Charity Garden Tours as well as countless spontaneous visits from friends. The door was always open.
Peter’s kindness and commitment to giving back will not be forgotten by those who knew him. Throughout the years, he served on various boards and participated actively in social causes within charitable organizations like Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Shelter House, Masons, Pass Lake Historical Society, Scandinavian House Society among others.
A man of numerous talents and interests would take pages to describe all that Peter accomplished throughout life-and how many lives he influenced along the way. He was a Carpenter; Gardener; Artist; Handyman; Real Estate Investor; Entrepreneur; Philanthropist; Biker; Classic Car Collector; Traveler; Pickleball Player; Cyclist; Shriner; Santa Claus-and so much more.
Peter leaves behind his devoted wife of 65 years Helen; their three sons Lyle (Tarja), Scott (Marilin), Jay; grandchildren Lia (Mike) and Kai (Meaghan); great-grandchildren Luuka and Kaarlo. He is also survived by four younger siblings: Elsie, Ellen, Nancy , and Paul along with their families.
The overwhelming love shown through messages , visits , food deliveries , and support during Peter’s illness means so much. You know who you are-we thank you all deeply!
Sincere appreciation goes out particularly towards Dr. Trochimchuk GP plus Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Centre staff including Drs. Holzapfel, Ramchandar , Bezanson as well professional oncology nursing team-they provided compassionate care throughout this journey together.
A Celebration of Life will take place Thursday September 10th from 2:00-5:00 p. m. with presentations beginning at 3:00 at Valhalla Inn Ballroom.
