‘His love for family was unwavering and the time he spent with them was among life’s greatest treasures,’ says obituary for Sgt. Brett Carleton
A memorial service is set for Saturday to honor Barrie homicide detective Sgt. Brett Carleton, with visitation scheduled for Friday.
Carleton passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 26, and Barrie police announced his death the following morning. No cause of death has been provided.
“Brett was a devoted father, beloved son, brother, uncle, friend and dedicated member of the Barrie Police Service,” states his obituary. “He lived his life with courage, integrity, loyalty and an unwavering commitment to those he loved and served. Above all else, Brett was a family man.”
Carleton had two daughters who were described as “the light of his life.”
“Brett took immense pride in his family and the relationships he built throughout his life,” says the obituary. “His love for family was unwavering and the time he spent with them was among life’s greatest treasures.”

The family says he will be remembered for his strength, generosity, sense of humor and loyalty.
“Whether as a father, son, brother, uncle, colleague or friend, he touched countless lives through his kindness, dedication and ability to make others feel valued. His impact on his family, friends, colleagues and community will never be forgotten,” says his obituary.
Visitation will take place at Adams Funeral Home in Barrie at 445 St. Vincent St., on Friday, Sept. 4 from 2-4 p. m. and 6-8 p. m., with a memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 5 beginning at 11 a. m. The memorial service will also be livestreamed.
After the service concludes, there will be a reception for friends and family in the Adams Reception Centre.
The obituary mentions that all uniformed personnel are invited to join at the Barrie Royal Canadian Legion branch at 410 St. Vincent St., from noon to 3 p. m., for fellowship and refreshments.
Carleton started out in law enforcement with the Toronto Police Service in 2000 before joining the Barrie Police Service as a constable in 2002.
Over the years he worked in various investigative units within Barrie police and was promoted to sergeant of the homicide and major crime unit in 2023.
“While he was proud to serve and protect his community, it was the friendships and camaraderie he developed with his fellow officers that meant most to him,” according to the obituary. “He deeply respected those he worked alongside and considered many of them family.”
He led investigations into several high-profile cases in recent years within Barrie.
One such case involved Autumn Shaganash’s disappearance; she is a local Indigenous woman who has been missing since 2023.
“When I heard the news (of his death), I instantly started crying and I couldn’t believe it,” Autumn’s sister Lili-Anne Moore told Barrie Today last week.
“Brett has been part of my life for three years now; he’s always been there when I had questions,” she added. “I could just send him a text at 4 a. m., he’d read it almost instantly; he’s always been there for me.”
Away from work duties Carleton “embraced life wholeheartedly” enjoying cooking meals for family and friends in their kitchen.
An avid sports fan as well-he had particular enthusiasm for cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs each season without fail.
“Brett found joy outdoors whether ATVing or hunting; spending time close to nature brought him happiness too-and don’t forget about trucks! Whether driving one or chatting about new ones coming out-he just loved trucks,” notes his obituary.
“Though we lost him far too soon; Brett’s memory will forever remain alive in those who had privilege knowing him well.”

Dedicating himself through years earned multiple formal commendation certificates recognizing excellence during service-including life-saving actions acknowledged back in 2017!
In addition received recognition again from both Ontario’s Province along city officials including mayor herself! Both awarded honors stemming directly connected efforts made toward investigating duties performed over time spent serving others nearby communities!
