With Labour Day long weekend just around the corner, the Ontario Provincial Police want everyone to prioritize safety while traveling on roads, trails, and waterways.
The OPP reports that in the past decade, this long weekend has recorded more accidents and fatalities than any other holiday period on OPP-patrolled areas.
“Since 2015, there have been 69 collisions and 76 fatalities over Labour Day weekends alone. Nearly all fatalities can be attributed to impaired driving, speeding, inattentiveness and not wearing a seatbelt or helmet, or wearing one improperly. On our waterways, nearly all fatalities can be attributed to not wearing a lifejacket,” wrote the OPP in a news release.
Police are urging drivers to plan for extra travel time, slow down, stay alert, drive sober and wear their seatbelt, helmet or lifejacket. Throughout the weekend, officers will be actively patrolling to educate and enforce safe driving practices across the province.
The OPP also reminds everyone that they can report suspected impaired or dangerous drivers by calling 9-1-1.
As summer begins to wrap up, the OPP hopes people will choose safe and responsible actions so everyone can reach their destinations safely.
