A heat alert has been issued for Windsor-Essex in southwestern Ontario.
From Monday through Wednesday, temperatures are expected to reach nearly 38 C with humidity – possibly extending into Thursday, “although confidence is low at this stage,” Environment and Climate Change Canada mentioned in a statement.
Without factoring in the humidity, the weather agency’s yellow advisory indicates maximum temperatures could hit 31 C and minimum overnight lows could be between 20 to 22 C.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit warns that older adults, infants, and young children are particularly vulnerable to the extreme heat. The same goes for people who work or exercise outdoors or have specific health issues.
Signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness, and confusion.
Here’s a list of suggestions to avoid heat-related illnesses and stay cool:
Keep an eye on local weather forecasts and warnings regularly.
Drink lots of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat and lightweight, loose-fitting clothes.
Take a cool bath or shower when needed.
Limit outdoor activities to the coolest parts of the day.
Never leave children, adults, or pets in parked cars.
