Residents should get ready for potentially hazardous weather this afternoon and evening as Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a red-level Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Mississauga.

Environment and Climate Change Canada warns that conditions are right for severe thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain, and possibly tornadoes.

The weather system is expected to develop this afternoon and last into the evening, posing risks of strong wind gusts, hail, and intense rainfall. The forecast confidence is high, so residents should stay informed and be ready to seek shelter if conditions worsen.

Risk of Flooding and Rising Water Levels

Along with the severe thunderstorm watch, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) have issued flood watch notices.

Heavy rain could lead to rapidly rising water levels in rivers, streams, creeks, and stormwater systems. Residents are advised to keep away from shorelines, waterways, and other areas where conditions might become unsafe.

Important Reminders

Periods of heavier rain may raise water levels throughout the city. For safety reasons, residents are encouraged to:

Stay away from rivers, creeks, stormwater ponds and Lake Ontario. Avoid low-lying areas that may flood quickly. Watch for washouts near culverts and bridges.

Driving Safely in Wet Conditions

Poor weather can create dangerous driving situations. Residents are reminded to:

Allow extra travel time. Slow down and maintain distance between vehicles. Drive according to road and weather conditions. Avoid driving through flooded roads or standing water. Turn around if routes seem unsafe.

Pedestrians and cyclists should exercise caution as wet surfaces can be slippery and visibility may be lower.

Reporting Fallen Trees

If you see a fallen or hazardous tree:

How Residents Can Prepare

A few simple steps can help lower risk:

Clear debris from storm drains around your home. Check downspouts to ensure they direct water away from foundations. Secure any loose outdoor items. Put together an emergency kit in case of a power outage.

City’s Response Plan

The City of Mississauga is keeping an eye on weather patterns as well as local waterways.

City crews will monitor storm drains closely and respond promptly to flooding or water pooling issues. Residents can report problems online or by calling 311 (or 905-615-4311 from outside city limits). The City’s Office of Emergency Management continues collaborating with conservation authority partners.

The Meaning Behind Weather Alert Colors

Environment and Climate Change Canada uses color-coded alerts so people can quickly grasp the level of risk involved. The potential danger increases from yellow to orange to red.

Weather alert colour scale showing increasing risk from yellow to orange to red. Yellow alerts indicate hazardous weather with moderate, localized or short-term impacts. Orange alerts indicate severe weather likely to cause significant damage, disruption or health impacts. Red alerts indicate very dangerous and potentially life-threatening weather with extensive, widespread and prolonged impacts.

Differences Between Flood Watches & Warnings

Flood outlook: Early notice about potential flooding risks. Flood watch: Flooding could occur in specific areas. Flood warning: Flooding is currently happening or expected soon.

If a flood warning has been issued, take immediate action to protect yourself from danger as well as your home from flood damage.
