Mc GREGOR, Texas (KWTX) – Friends and family of Markham Brown Dossett remember him as someone who passed away while doing what he loved best – caring for his ranch near Mc Gregor, along with his cattle and horses.

Dossett, 72, was a retired stockbroker and Navy veteran known for his extensive knowledge of history. He lost his life on Tuesday in an accident while riding a horse on his property.

A service is scheduled for 1:30 p. m. Wednesday, April 1, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Waco. The Rev. Lance Ousley, The Rev. Ray Bagby, The Rev. Samantha R. E. Smith and The Rev. Gavin Tomlin will officiate the ceremony. Burial with military honors will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.

You won’t find a lengthy obituary for Dossett on the Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home website; instead, he opted to leave a brief message in his own words:

Loved by his dogs

Respected by his horses

Challenged by his sons

Endured by his wife

Enjoyed by his friends

Susan Dossett along with two of his close friends, Curtis Cleveland and Richard Karr, all agree that Dossett left this world on his own terms while engaged in activities he loved-riding horses and working at the ranch.

Cleveland and Karr are part of a group that gathered every Wednesday morning to enjoy breakfast at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church with Dossett.

“There is no question about it,” said Cleveland, who has known Dossett since their high school days at Richfield High School in Waco. “We had breakfast together every week, and if anyone asked him what he’d like to be doing when the good Lord called him home, he would have said, ‘I want to be on my ranch working with my cattle.’”

Cleveland also mentioned that they both shared a commitment to helping high school students in Mc Lennan County learn valuable skills for their futures. They each offer annual scholarships to support local students pursuing further training.

“It didn’t matter who you were or where you came from; Markham was always the first one to drop everything to help,” Cleveland reflected. “If any of our friends needed assistance at any time day or night, he’d say, ‘Let’s go help them.’”

Jim Fanell met Dossett more than 20 years ago when both served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk in Japan as members of the Navy Reserves.

Fanell remembers how Dossett led efforts to bring relief supplies during last year’s terrible flooding in the Texas Hill Country.

“Markham was truly a force of nature,” Fanell wrote in tribute to him. “He came from generations of Americans who settled in Texas nearly 150 years ago. He excelled in so many areas-a real renaissance man….”</P“But for me , he represented what it means to be an American cowboy. He rode , roped , and ranched. And he was an excellent shepherdtohisherdoflonghorns , heifersandhorses … But above all , he wasan Americanpatriotwholovedhiswife , his twostrongsons, andthecountry. Hewasactive , not passive.
