OTTAWA – Google Maps has updated its platform to show “Lake America” when users in the United States search for that term.
Canadians will continue to see it referred to as Lake Ontario – unless they specifically search for the term Lake America.
The tech giant stated in a post on its corporate website that this change was made because the U. S. government’s geographic names database has officially renamed the lake.
U. S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to rename the body of water Lake America.
This decision came just days after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa stalled, prompting Canada to announce retaliatory tariffs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney reacted to Trump’s executive order by asserting that Canadians recognize Lake Ontario will always keep its original name.
