John Larkin, who was 101 years and 11 months old, passed away on July 11, 2026. He lived in Vancouver, Canada, and Dublin, Ireland. John’s professional journey lasted over five decades; he began as a Telegraph boy and eventually became the Head of Payroll for Ireland’s Telephone company. There, he combined his love for numbers with innovation by helping to create the company’s first computerized payroll system. Throughout his life, John stayed active-cycling and playing soccer when he was younger, and later enjoying pitch and putt, bowling, and gardening during his retirement. He had a passion for reading adventure stories as well as war and spy novels. At age 91, he chose to move to Vancouver to be closer to his children. Family was at the heart of everything he did. After losing his wife Kathleen in 2003 due to an unexpected illness, John faced life with enthusiasm once again. He was always ready to lend a hand or offer support whenever family or friends needed it. Known for being kind-hearted, positive, organized, fun-loving and hard-working, he enjoyed sharing his skills with others whenever possible. Social events were made brighter by his presence; people loved having him around. He is survived by his son Paul; daughters Sylvia and Denise; their spouses Margaret, Joe and Tony; along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was the last of seven siblings; his older sister Eileen also lived until she reached 100 years old. His grandson John-Paul preceded him in death. All who knew him will feel a deep sense of loss at his passing. The funeral mass will take place at Corpus Christi Church located at 6350 Nanaimo Street on Monday July 20th at 10:30 am. A celebration of life will occur later on. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Burnaby Hospital and Community Foundation.
