The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking into a deadly accident that occurred on Highway 407 in Markham.

Authorities report that a 37-year-old man from Toronto was driving a passenger vehicle when it collided with a fuel tanker truck just before 2:30 p. m. on the southbound ramp leading onto Highway 407.

“My understanding is the passenger vehicle was broken down or disabled in one of the live lanes of the westbound lanes of the 407,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a social media post. “While it was sitting there in that live lane with the driver inside that vehicle, it was struck by a tractor-trailer. The driver inside was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer did not suffer any physical injuries as a result of the crash.

All northbound and southbound ramps on Highway 404 leading to the westbound lanes on Highway 407 were closed for several hours for the investigation.
