Fans of the Ottawa Senators might want to brace themselves for this news.

In a recent episode of 32 Thoughts the Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared insights from a source who speculated that former Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson could be traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2026-27 season.

Here’s what Friedman mentioned on his podcast.

“Depending on how both teams’ seasons go, my prediction is Erik Karlsson becomes a Toronto Maple Leaf.. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a good prediction.’ Now what’s interesting about that.. When Kyle Dubas was GM of the Leafs, he tried to trade for Karlsson at one point. If it comes to the point where he’s on the market, (his source said) Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson, and Erik Karlsson are in Toronto. That’s his pick.”

Karlsson rumored to join the Maple Leafs

Clearly, this makes sense. The Maple Leafs could use some elite talent on their defense, and adding Karlsson would certainly help. Unfortunately for Senators fans, this would be another blow, especially after losing Daniel Alfredsson to their rivals. Watching the Maple Leafs gain another franchise legend would be tough.

The silver lining here is that this prediction hinges on how things play out for both teams. So if either the Pittsburgh Penguins or Maple Leafs experience significant changes, this trade may not happen. Honestly though, it doesn’t seem entirely logical right now. While the Maple Leafs are looking for defensive help, they might not want to take on extra cap space associated with someone like Karlsson.

Moreover, Karlsson has control over his own future. With a no-movement clause in place, he can accept or decline a trade to the Maple Leafs if it arises. It might be hard for Senators fans to digest this possibility but since he has a say in where he goes next, there shouldn’t be any hard feelings towards him. Especially considering he could decide to come back to Ottawa next offseason or even sooner if he opts for a trade back to Canada instead of any other team in the NHL.
