South Asians Have Been Farming in Canada Since the Early 1900s
The relationship between agriculture and migration has been present in Canada for over a century now. Tarlok Singh Sahota is director at Lakehead University’s agricultural research station located in Thunder Bay, Ont., where he studied agronomy at Punjab Agricultural University back in India. He explains that Punjabi farmers have long been part of Canadian agriculture generations ago-especially notable in British Columbia. Historical data collected by the South Asian Studies Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley reveals that by 1909 there were 35 South Asians working on farms within Mission and Matsqui areas found within B. C.’s Lower Fraser Valley. By 1923 records show there were 25 farms owned or operated by this relatively small South Asian community within British Columbia. The earliest record for Ontario dates back to 1914 when several Sikh men worked as farmhands on an estate close to Pickering which is east of Toronto. As per Statistics Canada data from 2021 approximately 8,960 Sikh individuals worked within agriculture across Canada representing about 2.1 percent of workers employed within this industry sector. Comparatively speaking there are currently around 771790 Sikhs residing here making up roughly same percentage (2.1) regarding total population count throughout Canada as well. “Farming is ingrained into our culture so they started owning farms or farming as quickly as possible,” says Sahota. In places like Brampton where about 340000 South Asians live today-that farming heritage meets an increasing demand for vegetables often used regularly inside Punjabi kitchens according Sahota; however these aren’t usually found among conventional Ontario farms either. Many such vegetables tend require lots water & care ensuring controlled reliable moisture levels separate from natural rainfall throughout growing season itself too , he adds.
