The United States and Canada are currently in a trade conflict, with Canada likely to respond after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products over the weekend following stalled negotiations between the two nations.
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Mr Trump stated on social media.
Ontario is Canada’s largest province and hosts a significant portion of the country’s automotive industry.
Tensions between both countries are rising, with Mr Trump warning Canadian officials on Monday to “fall in line” or face repercussions “far worse” than current tariffs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has accused Washington of attempting to dominate Canada.
Mr Trump also warned about new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, car parts, and steel. In response, Mr Carney remarked that US trade expectations seemed aimed at “destroying our major industries,” which include vehicles, steel, and aluminum.
Canada and the United States share one of the world’s largest trading partnerships with highly integrated supply chains across sectors like automotive, energy, agriculture, and manufacturing. A prolonged trade dispute could be costly for businesses and workers on both sides of the border.
Businesses and consumers find themselves in a tough spot as they worry about possible price hikes.
The Canadian finance minister Francois-Philippe Champagne along with three other Cabinet ministers are expected to announce support measures for workers impacted by tariffs on Tuesday morning.
Mr Carney indicated that Canada might need to shift from matching US tariffs dollar for dollar towards more targeted retaliation focused on safeguarding Canadian jobs and businesses.
“An attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States” is “not something we’re going to accept,” Mr Carney declared.
He was even more direct in French.
“We learned during the negotiations that the Americans want to destroy our major industries, including autos, steel and aluminium,” Mr Carney said.
“That was one of the main reasons we said no. It was a bad deal.”
