Goldfish in Hamilton Harbour Show Strong Seasonal Habits

Over a span of two years, the surviving goldfish returned to the same wintering spots and spawning locations each spring, which sheds light on why this decorative pet has become an invasive species that's tough to eliminate from the Great Lakes. The study, led by biologist Christine Boston from Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences in Burlington, Ontario, was published in the Journal of Great Lakes Research. It started when the team captured 19 large adult goldfish from the harbour between June 2017 and October 2018, with each fish measuring at least a foot long. Boston's team surgically implanted transmitters into the fish that emitted unique acoustic signals to a network of underwater receivers already set up in the bay for monitoring stocked walleye. This existing setup allowed biologists to track where the goldfish traveled and when, without having to create a new tracking system from scratch. How the tracking revealed a seasonal pattern Eight of the tagged fish died during the project, but data gathered from eleven survivors was consistent enough to show a clear seasonal pattern. According to Boston, these fish spent their winters in the same areas year after year and returned to identical spawning habitats every spring. Only one fish deviated from this routine by leaving the harbour for about two weeks during winter 2018-2019 to explore open waters of Lake Ontario before coming back. That consistency proved significant for how these fish utilize the harbour. Goldfish favored the western end of the harbour during both winter and spring due to limited suitable spawning areas (shallow water abundant with aquatic plants) found elsewhere in the bay. They were also frequently detected at Grindstone Creek's mouth during their spawning period, showcasing high loyalty to particular spawning sites within their population. This is where things transition from intriguing animal behavior to a real management challenge. Hamilton Harbour has suffered extensive degradation due to years of industrial activities, and its goldfish population has surged recently-possibly filling an ecological gap left by dwindling common carp nearby. Why predictable fish are still hard to remove Knowing exactly when and where goldfish congregate might seem like it would simplify control efforts; it does help somewhat. A follow-up study published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences built directly on this tracking information to create a removal plan. It capitalized on predictable spring gatherings by conducting four targeted sampling events over one April, successfully capturing 642 adult goldfish from just one season alone. Those gatherings typically occurred in a small sheltered area where a major tributary flows into the harbour during evening hours-allowing crews greater precision compared with random netting attempts. However, while knowing where goldfish tend to gather aids catching those already present, it doesn't slow down how quickly they can be replaced by newcomers. Goldfish are aggressive feeders; they uproot aquatic plants as they search for food, and their rapid growth along with high reproduction rates leave few natural predators capable of controlling numbers once they've established themselves. A related habitat modeling study published in the Journal of Fish Biology utilized telemetry data from that same harbour to analyze habitat use across various fish species-and found that goldfish’s strong seasonal preferences make them among the more predictable species despite significant pressure on overall ecosystem health caused by decades of industrial activity.A goldfish with flowing fins swimming alongside other goldfish. What starts as a tiny orange fish in someone's aquarium can grow into an invader reaching lengths up to one foot within just a few years-transforming local ecology by uprooting vegetation and competing fiercely against native species for food and space. The capture of 642 fish within one season indicates that tracking data can lead directly toward effective removal numbers; however, whether such efforts will truly reduce population size over time will likely depend as much on preventing new releases as on removing existing ones.[ad_2]Source link
