Bail Denied for One Suspect in London Explosives Case

One of the four individuals charged after the alleged discovery of dangerous chemicals, high explosives, and firearms at a residence in London, Ont., has been denied bail.

During a hearing on Friday at the London courthouse, Fei Han, 25, was ordered to remain in custody with a court appearance scheduled for next week.

The evidence shared during the hearing and the grounds for the denial are subject to a publication ban.

Han, along with Jerry Tong, Zekun Wang, and Feiyang (Astrid) Ji face over two dozen charges including possession of explosives and firearm manufacturing after a lengthy search of a home at 212 Chesham Place that concluded earlier this month.

The investigation began when police received a report about trespassing from Western University on January 24 after two men entered the Claudette Mac Kay-Lassonde Pavilion just after 1 a. m. ET.

One individual was apprehended right outside the building. The investigation then led them to the nearby University Heights neighborhood where three others were arrested.

Last week, the London Police Service confirmed they are working alongside the RCMP and clarified that this case is not linked to terrorism or national security matters.

Court proceedings ongoing

At Han’s bail hearing, he was also instructed not to communicate directly or indirectly with his co-accused unless it’s through their lawyers for defense preparation.

The four suspects are current or former students at Western University; Tong, Wang, and Han studied in the engineering department.

Last year, these three men shared videos online promoting an anti-drone military system that they hoped would attract funding. The video stated that they were “taking on the challenge of stopping weaponized drones armed with hand grenades and small explosives.”

Bail hearings are being arranged for Han’s co-accused as well; Wang learned today that he will appear before a judge next Friday.
