Authorities report that alcohol “may have been a factor” in a single-vehicle accident in Pickering early Friday morning, resulting in both passengers being hospitalized, with one taken to a trauma center suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Durham Police responded to the crash shortly before 3 a. m. near Kingston Road and Altona Road in the western part of Pickering. According to police, a Nissan sedan was heading south on Altona Road when it lost control, veered off the road, and overturned.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the Nissan flipped on its side, with both trapped occupants later rescued by emergency services.
Both individuals were transported to a Toronto trauma center; the 18-year-old passenger suffered life-threatening injuries while the 18-year-old driver sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The surrounding roads were closed for several hours as members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit collected evidence. The investigation into what caused the collision is ongoing. “Alcohol,” police stated, “may have been a factor in the collision.”
