Former PGA Tour player Matt Mc Quillan, a Canadian from Kingston, Ontario, who participated in 32 tour events throughout his career, passed away on August 5 “surrounded by his family.” He was just 45 years old.

Mc Quillan earned his PGA Tour card through Q-School in 2010 and made seven cuts in 21 events in 2011. His top finish came that year at the John Deere Classic where he shot a final round of 64 to tie for third place. He also tied for sixth place at the Reno-Tahoe Open and earned $582,933 during that season.

“It’s been a long time coming, but I convinced myself I was working on the right things and it was going to click any day, and just happened to be this tournament,” he told reporters at TPC Deere Run in 2011 after tying with Zach Johnson and finishing five shots behind winner Steve Stricker.

Introduced to golf at age 10 by his father Mark at Garrison Golf and Curling Club in Kingston, Matt enjoyed an impressive amateur career and won several Canadian junior championships before playing collegiately at both Oklahoma State and Georgia while representing Canada in international competitions.

Mc Quillan turned pro in 2003, and two years later he shot rounds of 66-66 during the final two rounds of the Canadian Tour’s Edmonton Open to defeat Graham De Laet, who was an amateur back then, by six shots.

According to the PGA Tour’s website, Mc Quillan remained active in golf as a teaching professional, happily introducing the sport to new generations of eager Canadian golfers.

“Matty was a respected golfer, devoted son, hilarious brother, and friend,” an online obituary states. It noted that he died at Kingston General Hospital in Ontario; however, no cause of death has been shared. “His father, Mark, started teaching him how to swing the club when he was just ten years old. His passion and talent grew immensely. Starting as a junior on the Canadian Tour and making it to the PGA in 2011, Matt developed lifelong friendships while mentoring anyone who loved the game of golf.

“He will be deeply missed by many and his spirit, love and compassion will be remembered every day. Rest easy, Matty. We love you.”
