Years of cherished memories were strewn across Mary Winning’s curb in St. Catharines, Ont., on Sunday, mixed together with sewage-stained keepsakes, furniture, boxes, and bags.

The 93-year-old’s home faced flooding twice within five days due to consecutive storms that unleashed months’ worth of rain on the city in just a few hours on July 27 and again on August 2, overwhelming sewer systems and causing sewage-contaminated water to flood into thousands of homes.

“I’m relieved she isn’t able to go downstairs because it would break her heart to see,” said her daughter Gail Winning, who was there with her sister Carol Macdonald.

Their mother, who lost her husband last year, has lived in the bungalow for 66 years and had a black eye from falling during the turmoil caused by the floods.

“In all these years my mom has lived here there’s never been an insurance claim or a flood; now it’s happened twice in one week,” said Macdonald. “Seeing the couches and everything out here on the curb is really emotional for her.”

State of emergency continues

The city remains under a state of emergency, as does the nearby town of Lincoln, which also experienced severe flooding.

Fortunately, much-needed assistance has arrived.

Numerous volunteers from Team Rubicon Canada came to the city from across southern Ontario over the weekend to support those most affected by flooding.

Working alongside city and provincial emergency officials, these teams will concentrate on hundreds of individuals registered in a vulnerable persons registry set up by the city to identify those unable to cope with flooding alone, such as seniors and those with health issues.

Volunteer teams will spend the next week or more doing hard labor like removing soiled furniture and carpets and tearing out damaged drywall, according to Mischa Kaplan, CEO of Team Rubicon Canada.

“It’s what we call mucking out people’s basements.. [so] we can leave the house ready for repairs like flooring or drywall,” he explained to .

“It’s up to nine or ten hours of demanding work,” said Kaplan. He added that conditions might become even tougher since they often need to wear gas masks and protective suits if there’s any risk related to asbestos or other dangers.

The volunteers won’t be staying in fancy hotels; they’ll sleep on cots at St. Catharines Collegiate secondary school gymnasium.

St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe mentioned at a news conference last Tuesday that declaring a state of emergency was intended to signal that his city needed help.
“We have used all our resources,” he stated. “Recovery will take more than what our municipality can handle alone.”

At Mary Winning’s home on Sunday, four members from Rubicon-known as greyshirts due to their grey T-shirts-were seen pulling out soaked furniture through a small side window from the devastated basement. They created a small mountain that spilled onto the neighbor’s curb.
